Shocking Twist: Maple Leafs Add 3 Coaches, Including Senators Icon

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Daniel Alfredsson as an associate coach. He writes, “Daniel Alfredsson is joining the Maple Leafs. The Hall of Famer who spent the last three seasons as an Ottawa assistant coach, is expected to become Toronto’s associate head coach.”

The team also announced that they have added John Gruden and Brad Werenka. Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde will not be returning as assistant coaches next season.

It’s a shocking twist few would have seen coming, given Alfredsson’s status as one of the most beloved Senators in franchise history.

Friedman adds:

“It’s just so incredibly weird. During the ferocious Battles of Ontario — four playoff series in five years at the start of this century — Alfredsson and Mats Sundin captained these bitter rivals. They were friendly and held great respect for one another, but there was nothing but disdain and hatred between these two teams on the ice.”

Alfredsson will join Sundin in Toronto’s front office. Sundin works alongside new GM John Chayka, while Alfredsson will help coach Jim Hiller. “I’m incredibly excited to add Daniel, John and Brad to our coaching staff,” said Hiller. “Daniel’s experience, leadership and understanding of the game speak for themselves. John has established himself as one of the top coaches in the American Hockey League and played an instrumental role in leading the Marlies to a Calder Cup championship last season. Brad brings a unique combination of NHL experience, player development and expertise in performance analytics. Together, they’ll be outstanding additions to our team.”

Friedman notes, “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised to see them reunite, but, man, it feels crazy writing this story.”

Michael Andlauder of the Senators released a statement:

“One of the first moves we made after taking over the franchise was bringing Daniel Alfredsson back into the fold as an assistant coach in December of 2023. I quickly learned that Alfie embodied all the characteristics of what it meant to be an Ottawa Senator. While I wish he wasn’t joining an arch rival, Alfie is forever an Ottawa Senator and the door will always be open for his return. He has done so much for our organization and community and he has my full respect.”
