Connor Hellebuyck Trade Rumors Heating Up as Panthers Circle Back

The speculation surrounding Winnipeg Jets star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck continues to intensify, and several contenders appear to be keeping a close eye on the three-time Vezina Trophy winner.

According to recent reports, the Florida Panthers remain interested in Hellebuyck despite already making one blockbuster move this offseason. Multiple reports on Wednesday indicated that there is “some traction” on Hellebuyck discussions and that Florida is still exploring the possibility. D’Amico later added that other teams have also checked in, including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres.

The growing chatter comes after multiple insiders suggested Hellebuyck’s future in Winnipeg is less certain than ever. While the Jets are not actively shopping their franchise netminder, teams around the league continue to call, sensing an opportunity if the situation changes.

Panthers Continue to Lurk

Florida’s interest in Hellebuyck has been well documented over the past several weeks. With Sergei Bobrovsky nearing the end of his current contract and questions surrounding the club’s long-term goaltending picture, the Panthers appear determined to keep all options open.

Despite recently paying a steep price to acquire Brady Tkachuk, several analysts believe Florida still possesses enough assets to remain in the conversation for another blockbuster. Adding Hellebuyck to a roster already featuring Matthew Tkachuk and now Brady Tkachuk would further cement Florida’s status as one of the NHL’s premier Stanley Cup contenders.

Buffalo Could Be a Sneaky Team to Watch

One intriguing development from insiders reports is Buffalo’s involvement.

The Sabres have quietly explored upgrades in goal over the last several months and could view Hellebuyck as the final piece needed to push them into legitimate playoff contention. Buffalo possesses a strong prospect pool and several attractive assets such as the recently acquired 4th overall pick that could interest Winnipeg in any potential deal.

While the Panthers may offer immediate championship appeal, the Sabres could potentially provide the Jets with a more appealing long-term package.

Could the Oilers Have Something Bigger in Mind?

Another intriguing wrinkle surfaced earlier this week when NHL insider David Pagnotta revealed he had spoken with a few goaltenders whose names have been prominent on the trade market. According to Pagnotta, none of those netminders indicated they would stand in the way of a move to Edmonton, potentially giving the Oilers additional flexibility when they pursue a major upgrade in goal. However, with Hellebuyck’s name continuing to dominate the rumor mill, it’s fair to wonder whether Edmonton could be quietly monitoring the situation.

The Oilers have made no secret of their desire to improve in goal, and with Mike Babcock now behind the bench, management could decide to pursue an elite solution if one becomes available.

A deal involving Hellebuyck would undoubtedly require significant assets and salary-cap maneuvering, making it difficult to complete. Still, in an offseason already filled with surprises, it may be premature to rule Edmonton out entirely.

For now, Florida appears to remain the frontrunner, Buffalo has emerged as a team worth watching, and the possibility of another mystery club entering the race cannot be discounted.
