Canadiens Trade Petry, Poehling to Penguins
The Montreal Canadiens have found a trade partner and moved Jeff Petry. He heads to the Pittsburgh Penguins with Ryan Poehling for Mike Matheson and draft pick.
The Montreal Canadiens have traded Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Mike Matheson and a fourth-round draft pick in 2023. There was a ton of speculation Petry could be on the move, but Canadiens GM Kent Hughes said he would only move the player in the right deal and with no salary retained.
Petry is a veteran offensive defenceman who loves to shoot the puck and will produce for the Penguins offensively. He can transition the puck and is a strong rush defender. Poehling is a young depth forward. The Canadiens wanted to get a defenseman back which is why Matheson was included.
GM Ron Hextall said of the trade: “When you’re trading for good players, you’re going to have to give up good players. Mike [Matheson] is a good player… We just feel like Jeff [Petry], at this point, is a little better fit for us. He can play all situations, he can log big minutes.”
Petry has three years remaining on his contract with an AAV of $6.25 million and is still owed $20 million in actual salary.
