Canadian Teams Daily Rumours: Maple Leafs, Canucks & Jets
Three Canadian rumours to watch: Laughton’s L.A. fit, Burke’s GM interview in Vancouver, and the Jets facing a tough roster call.
This edition of Canadian Teams Daily Rumours includes three quick Canadian rumblings to chew on. First, Scott Laughton might stick in Los Angeles after a nice run with the Kings. Second, Patrick Burke (Brian’s son) got a polite interview in Vancouver’s GM search. Third, the Jets are being nudged toward a tough roster decision to escape the “mushy middle.”
All three moves could quietly reshape their clubs this summer — or just make for tasty offseason chatter.
Maple Leafs Rumour: Ex-Maple Leafs Scott Laughton — Looks Like He Might Stick in L.A.
Scott Laughton landed in Los Angeles and immediately fit — more minutes, more responsibility, and his best five‑year even‑strength Corsi‑for (48%) to show for it. He scored five goals in 21 games as a steady third‑line center, and the Kings clearly liked what they saw: Laughton’s play picked up, he’s an Ontario guy who seemed comfortable, and reports say he’s got “high” interest in re-signing.
Money-wise, AFP Analytics pegs him around $3.038M — basically what he’s making now — but center demand could push his market price higher. With Anže Kopitar’s $7M coming off the books, L.A. has the cap wiggle room to keep the guy they gave up a second‑rounder for; if both sides want it, this feels like a very doable reunion.

Canucks Rumour: Brian Burke’s Kid Gets a Shot — Patrick Burke Interviews in Vancouver
Patrick Burke, son of Brian Burke, popped up in Vancouver’s GM hunt today. He interviewed for the Canucks’ open GM spot, per Rick Dhaliwal. Patrick’s been VP of Player Safety since 2021 and brings solid scouting credentials from his years with the Philadelphia Flyers. He’s not just a name on a résumé; he’s got real league chops.
Long shot? Maybe. Deserved an interview? Absolutely. Vancouver’s casting a wide net for their 13th GM, and talking to someone with Patrick’s mix of player-eval experience and front-office credibility makes total sense.
Jets Rumour: Winnipeg Stuck in the Middle — Time to Shake the Roster
Murat Ates thinks the Winnipeg Jets are stuck in that annoying “too good to tank, too flawed to win” spot. Honestly, he’s right — you can see why fans are restless. His spicy option: move one of the big names (Connor Hellebuyck, Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, or Josh Morrissey) to jump-start a real rebuild or reload. Yes, gut-wrenching, but trading one core piece could bring back pieces that actually move the needle long-term.
He also argues they need a legit second-line center, not another stopgap. They could target a young player who’s stuck on someone else’s third line — think Mavrik Bourque or Peyton Krebs. Or, they could be smart and cheap. Bottom line: either double down and try to win now with changes, or embrace a proper reset; sitting in the mushy middle won’t get you past the first big test.
