Cam Talbot Reportedly Unhappy About Fleury Signing With Wild
Cam Talbot has let the Minnesota Wild know that sharing the duties in net next season with Marc-Andre Fleury might not be what he wants to do.
It doesn’t sound like the signing of Marc-Andre Fleury to a two-year extension in Minnesota is sitting all that well with goaltender Cam Talbot. According to reports, his agent met with Bill Guerin at the NHL Draft and laid out how his client is feeling about Fleury’s new deal and said, “Billy’s got a lot to think about.”
Guerin said after signing Fleury that he hadn’t talked to Talbot but assumed the netminder would be ok with splitting the duties in goal next season. Immediately following the Fleury extension, Guering said, “We are thrilled to have Flower in Minnesota for the next two years. Between him and Cam we believe we have one of the strongest goalie tandems in the NHL.”

According to those commenting on the situation today, Guerin may have jumped the gun on how comfortable Talbot might be with all of this. The two netminders are good friends, but Talbot is on the final year of his current deal and will want to play as many games as possible to get his numbers to a place where he can cash in as a free agent this coming offseason. 40 games likely doesn’t help him do so.
Pierre LeBrun is reporting, “Cam Talbot’s agent George Bazos met with Wild GM Bill Guerin during the third round here. “We both stated our positions,” Bazos said via text message. “Billy has a lot to think about.” Michael Russo of The Athletic added:
“As I reported, Cam Talbot said after the season he doesn’t want to be traded. But there clearly were hurt feelings and this thing is coming to a head. Guerin met with Bazos and isn’t pleased. Guerin also can’t call Talbot because of phone outage in MTL.”
As for whether Talbot will request a trade, it may be too soon to go there. One thing is clear, if push comes to shove, Fleury will likely get the nod over Talbot if the two can’t co-exist.
