Wild GM Bill Guerin Absolutely Blasts Talbot’s Agent for Comments

Bill Guerin lashed out at Cam Talbot’s agent for not taking the news of Fleury’s signing in stride.

The situation in Minnesota regarding the goaltending for the team has gotten dicey over the past 24 hours. Following the announcement that the Wild had signed Marc-Andre Fleury to a two-year extension, it was learned, via Cam Talbot’s agent, that his client wasn’t terribly pleased with the fact Talbot was going to be sharing the net for a full season. Things got heated when GM Bill Guerin responded to the agent’s comments.

Following a statement from agent George Bazos, who met with Guerin during the third round of the draft on Friday, Guerin responded. Bazos told the media, “We both stated our positions,” and “Billy has a lot to think about.” Michael Russo of The Athletic reported that Talbot wasn’t loving the fact that he’s now making less than Fleury and will have to share the net in a contract year.

Guerin responded to Bazos’ comments that he needs to decide what to do with Talbot, “I don’t have shit to do. Cam Talbot’s under contract. George can say whatever the hell he wants. My team’s set right now, and that’s the way it goes.” He added, “We can have all the discussions we want. Cam’s a member of our team. We really like Cam. All we’re trying to do is win.”

Russo went on to clarify what he thinks might be going on from Talbot’s perspective. He tweeted, “A lot of people are interpreting Bazos’ quote solely as Talbot wants to be traded (Talbot indicated otherwise after the season). I’m getting the impression from team sources that Talbot wants a raise by way of an extension. He makes $3 million this year vs. Fleury’s $3.5 million.”

Guerin is a fiery guy. He was competitive during his career and has been during his short tenure as a GM. He doesn’t hold back and he’s often good for a quote, this perhaps being his most direct thus far. It makes sense that he would want to keep both goalies. Fleury is a former Vezina winner and Talbot appeared in 49 games for the Wild this year posting a 32-12-4 record, a .911 save percentage and a 2.76 GAA. Both are on the Wild’s books for a reasonable cap hit and the Wild have plenty of their own salary cap concerns. There’s no reason to give one of these netminders away.

Guerin has said in the past that players need to be professional and understand their role for the overall success of the team. In this case, both goalies need to know their best bet is to win as many games as possible and keep the net. If they don’t like it, Guerin’s position seems to be, too bad. If their agents don’t like it, Guerin is clearly happy to tell them where to stick it.
