Blue Jackets Receiving Trade Request Calls on D Zach Werenski

The Columbus Blue Jackets Receiving Trade Request Calls on D Zach Werenski. Would they really trade the defenseman?

As per a report by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on his latest 31 Thoughts Podcast, the Columbus Blue Jackets are receiving calls on Zach Werenski and there’s potential they could be open to moving the player in the right trade. Friedman’s exact words were, “We’ll see if that goes anywhere or if that just stays.”

The Blue Jackets have made a number of moves already this offseason, including trading Seth Jones to the Chicago Blackhawks and trading Cam Atkinson to the Philadelphia Flyers for Jakub Voracek. Friedman added that Nick Foligno is gone, John Tortorella is gone, Pierre-Luc Dubois is gone and if they’re going to rip off the Band-Aid, they’ll rip of the Band-Aid. There’s absolutely a rebuild going on in Columbus, Friedman says.

Zach Werenski Columbus Blue Jackets trade rumors

“The one guy who’s kind of still there who’s a big piece is Werenski. I think they’ve been asked about him and we’ll see if that goes anywhere of that just stays.” He seemed to suggest not to overlook any possible scenario out of Columbus right now. There could be a lot more going on and the team might not be done making moves.

Blue Jackets Clearing Out Blueliners?

The Blue Jackets don’t have much on their blue line so if they traded Werenski, that would be a big loss for the franchise. They’ve picked up some decent young players who could turn into something, but right now, they are shy on minute-munchers having moved Seth Jones and David Savard (who was trade at last year’s deadline).

If Weresnki goes, it will be interesting to see if the team tries to pick up a different blueliner or goes with prospects and picks and this season becomes a write-off in terms of competing for a playoff spot. Some may argue that’s already the case and that there’s not a lot in Columbus right now to get the team terribly excited.

Werenski has one year remaining on his current deal at a rate of $5 million per season. He posted 20 points in 35 games this past season and regularly played more than 23-25 minutes per night. He’s been a regular point producer hitting close to or over 40 points per season in the last five years. He’s been productive since he joined the Blue Jackets and the NHL during the 2016-17 season.
