As more and more reports come to light regarding the situation between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Pierre-Luc Dubois, the more it seems apparent that there’s a problem between the two sides that may not be fixable. This is not to say a reconciliation is impossible, but because so few people seem to know what the real issue is, fewer people also seem to think fences can be mended.
The latest comes from Sportnet’s Elliotte Friedman who writes in his latest 31 Thoughts column that, “The more I’ve learned about Dubois’s situation, the more he, his agent and the Blue Jackets deserve credit for keeping it quiet as long as they did.”
Friedman adds that he understands why the Blue Jackets were so paranoid about an offer sheet. But now, as information surfaces that Dubois might have been looking for a way out, that the Blue Jackets were strapped for cash and Dubois was unhappy, the combination could mean disaster for Columbus. It’s why the team was so quick to clear money at the start of the offseason.
Friedman notes, “one player explained it: “We knew [Dubois] was thinking of leaving, if he could.”
Can This Situation Be Fixed?
Friedman gives credit to the Blue Jackets organization for keeping it under wraps and not letting the story leak, but as for whether or not things can be fixed, he’s asked. The answers don’t seem terribly positive.
Friedman notes, “there’s not a ton of optimism at this time.” He added that this issue is said not to be about head coach John Tortorella — at least not exclusively. The belief is that Dubois wants “a bigger stage”, which Friedman points out doesn’t always mean the biggest market.
GM Jarmo Kekalainen does have time. The Blue Jackets can’t do much about the bigger stage, but if he trades Dubois for a huge return, there will be tons of pressure on the center. The pressure to perform when the consequence is being called difficult is about the biggest spotlight any one player can ask for.
