On Wednesday, the Columbus Blue Jackets shared news of a long-term extension of Oliver Bjorkstrand. It’s a five-year, $27 million contract extension, the club announced and his new deal includes a 10-team no-trade clause beginning w the 2022-23 season.

An important piece for the Blue Jackets this season and moving forward, the contract details break down as follows:

  • 2021-22: $4.5M
  • 2022-23: $5.25M
  • 2023-24: $5.35M
  • 2024-25: $5.9M
  • 2025-26: $6.0M

The right-winger said of his extension that he’s happy to stay and noted, “I like my spot on the team. I like the city. There’s not much to complain about there.” It’s nice to hear after news broke earlier this week that center Pierre-Luc Dubois signed a two-year extension but is looking to be traded by the team at some point inside those two years.

Bjorkstrand said he started negotiations on a new contract a few weeks or a month ago and the details of the deal were ironed out on Tuesday. It came just a few days after Bjorkstrand was engaged to be married. He called it “Good timing.” He added, “It’s been a big week for me and my future so I’m very excited and pumped, obviously.”

Some Good News for a Team That Could Use It

Bjorkstrand’s new deal is well timed as it shows there are players who are committed to the franchise. He becomes the first Blue Jackets player to have a contract in the 2025-26 season. At just 25, he’s also relatively young and has a ton of potential.

This is the kind of signing GM Jarmo Kekaliannen needed. Someone who commits to the team and has the potential to be a home run signing should continue trending in the right direction.

He’s now played four full seasons for Columbus and been in four post-seasons. Perhaps he’s a bit of a good luck charm for the team as well.
