Defenseman Ben Chiarot has signed a four-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings. A $19 million deal that will see him earn a $4.75 million cap hit, this was the second big signing by the Red Wings on day one of free agency, first inking Andrew Copp to a hefty new deal.
A number of teams have time for Chiarot, but he’s also a player that takes a lot of heat for being one-dimensional and not terribly effective when it comes to the analytics community. Many will argue this deal is simply too pricey for a glorified third-pair defender. On the plus side, he is a physical defenceman who has experience and the ability to play big minutes. He’s a good skater, loves to battle along the boards and in front of the net, chases hits, and takes a lot of minor penalties.
The Red Wings now have LHDs Chiarot, Olli Määttä, Jake Walman and Jordan Oesterle on their roster.
