Andrew Copp Signs 5-Yr Deal with Detroit Red Wings
Andrew Copp has signed a five-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings. He is rumored to have left money on the table to join the team.
The Detroit Red Wings made a big splash in free agency, signing forward Andrew Copp to a five-year deal. Considered Mr. Everything, this might be the first really big move the Red Wings have made that suggests they are trying to turn a corner and go from a rebuilding team to a team that intends to start being competitive. Copp was a sought-after free agent with a big ticket and the Red Wings don’t sign him if their intention is to try and remain a lottery team. Word is, he specifically wanted to join the Red Wings and left money on the table to do so.
Copp, 28, was a key contributor down the stretch for the New York Rangers who made it to the Eastern Conference Final. He recorded eight goals and 10 assists in just 16 games playing on the team’s second line. The Rangers wanted to keep him but weren’t able to come to terms prior to free agency opening. Prior to playing with the Rangers, Copp was a growing part of the Winnipeg Jets’ overall attack. He really took off offensively in 2020-21 and is now a legitimate top-six threat.
Andrew Copp is really strong and coming off a career season. He had 21 goals and 53 points this season, including 18 points in 16 games after he was traded to the New York Rangers at the deadline. He’s considered an extremely versatile forward and the Red Wings will rely on him to be a big part of all facets of their game. He kills penalties, contributes to the powerplay and can play in all three forward spots. ,He is from Michigan and knows Dylan Larkin really well. He said going home and playing with his close friend was a major draw for him to the Red Wings. Larkin said he did try to convince Copp to come over, but Copp said it didn’t take much arm twisting.
Copp said after the signing that he is really happy to be around friends and family and can’t wait to get started. He also said he wasn’t overly concerned about the prospect of the Red Wings being considered less than competitive. He says he likes where the group is trending and you never know where they could be in a season or two.
According to The Athletic’s Max Bultman, the Detroit Red Wings are close to signing defensive defenseman Olli Maatta.
