What Is The Right Number for Darnell Nurse?

What does Darnell Nurse’s next contract with the Edmonton Oilers look like?

During the second intermission of the Edmonton Oilers versus the Vegas Golden Knights game on Saturday night, the Sportsnet panel discussed the Edmonton Oilers, their blue line and what it looks like going forward.

The discussion started centered around Ethan Bear and how he’s taken the bull by the horns and made it impossible for the Oilers to ignore his progression and contributions. Most of the panel believed the Oilers would be well-served to lock him up to an extension.

The conversation then turned to Darnell Nurse. Elliotte Friedman said the Oilers are working on their plans for Nurse. “Nurse is up after this year and he also has a situation where you really got to make a decision long-term.”

Nurse Wants to Be an Oiler

What might help as the Oilers work with Nurse to get something done, is that Friedman said Nurse wants to be part of the solution.

A player who has been only with the Oilers since debuting in the NHL, Nurse has been part of the bad years and then what looks to be the good, Nurse has grown and matured with this team, likely not nearly scraping the top of the ceiling for which he’s projected.

What Does the Contract Look Like?

Getting Nurse in at a reasonable number if going to be extremely important for the Oilers who have both Bear and Nurse to extend but also have a number of young defensive prospects under team control.

Brian Burke believes the Nurse number starts with a five and is a reasonable length of time. Kelly Hrudey believed it might be higher but said it was good Nurse wanted to be part of the team’s future. That helps the Oilers get Nurse in at a reasonable rate.
