What Happens If the Canucks Draft Their Coach’s Son?

Manny Malhotra says he’ll treat son Caleb like any other player. But if Vancouver drafts him, tough questions remain.

This is one of those “both obvious and weirdly complicated” NHL moments. Manny Malhotra being asked about the possibility of the Canucks drafting his son Caleb third overall isn’t a headline that needs drama, but it does raise a bunch of real questions you can’t ignore. Manny handles it exactly the right way: deflect, normalize, and promise to deal with it if it actually happens.

He’s right that it’s a fool’s errand to plan too hard for hypotheticals that haven’t happened, but it’s also fair to say we should talk about the potential issues now so nobody is surprised later.

Malhotra Comes Across as Sensible, But Is It That Easy?

The core of what he says is simple and sensible. At home, he’s first and foremost Dad; at the rink, he’s also a pro coach. They have a clear family rule: when Caleb brings up hockey, he chooses whether he wants Dad or Coach. That boundary is smart and honest — it gives Caleb agency and keeps family stuff from bleeding into professional life.

Manny also insists he’d treat Caleb like any other player if Vancouver did draft him. He knows fans and media will call him out for favouritism, but he’s confident Caleb can separate the roles and handle the next level.

The Big Question: Can a Coach Fairly Evaluate His Own Son?

Still, the questions everyone’s whispering about are real. Can a coach fairly evaluate and manage his own son under the microscope of a top-three pick? Will teammates feel like everything’s above board, or will there always be second-guessing about ice time, role, or scrutiny?

And can a player truly feel free to be just a player and not “the coach’s son,” especially when every internal decision is aired publicly? Manny’s answers don’t erase those concerns, but they show he’s thought about them and has family practices in place to reduce problems.

Interestingly, Caleb Prefers Coach-Mode Conversations

Also worth noting: Manny points to Caleb’s growth and maturity. The son wants coach mode when they talk hockey and looks ready to handle criticism and expectations. That matters; the more professional and self-sufficient Caleb is, the less this is a headache and the more it’s simply a hockey decision.

The bottom line is that it’s an awkward hypothetical with honest downsides. But Manny’s framework includes clear boundaries at home, treating Caleb like any other player, and trusting Caleb’s development. Those are the core of a reasonable path forward. If Vancouver actually picks him at three, that’s when theory meets reality.

Until then, it’s fine to flag the risks, but it’s also fair to give the Malhotra family the benefit of the doubt that they’re prepared to handle it.
