Oilers weigh a Nurse trade, Maple Leafs consider Laine, and family ties could quietly shape a busy NHL offseason.

The Oilers and Darnell Nurse might finally part ways as the team sizes up his future. Could the Maple Leafs take a low-risk flier on Patrik Laine to add cheap scoring? Is the Nurse-Oilers Split Finally Coming?

Mark Spector reports the Oilers are ready to move on from Darnell Nurse and plan to address his future this week. GM Stan Bowman is expected to meet with Nurse to see if he’s open to being traded. If Nurse wants to stay, talks get shelved; if not, Edmonton’s preference is to complete a deal before the season starts. The Oilers have already raised this before (he declined a request last summer).

The math makes sense for the Oilers. Nurse is a solid second-pair defenseman but carries a $9.25M cap hit and hasn’t consistently justified it, and the team needs flexibility. Personal ties to Connor McDavid have tempered earlier trade pushes, but with another disappointing season behind them, the club appears ready to act. That’s assuming Nurse isn’t set on remaining.

Could Patrik Laine Be a Low-Risk Leaf?

New GM John Chayka needs creativity to reshape a roster that’s overdue for upgrades. And Patrik Laine fits the “cheap upside” profile. A bonus-heavy one-year deal could be mostly upside for Toronto. Laine’s production dipped last season, but his shot and finishing ability are still real. Pairing him with elite playmakers could reignite his scoring.

It’s also a low-PR-risk move. Laine isn’t a drama magnet and could quietly slide into a depth-scoring role. If Chayka can sign him on short-term, performance-driven terms, it’s a sensible flier that gives the team another scoring option without mortgaging the future.

Family Ties That Could Move the Market This Summer

When teams chase players this summer, family connections could be the tiebreaker. Freddie Hamilton’s new role in Toronto makes Dougie-to-Toronto more plausible. With Manny Malhotra coaching in Vancouver and Caleb Malhotra possibly a target at No. 3, those personal links add real interest. Other scenarios might include Quinn Hughes to New Jersey if the Devils clear cap space. Kirby Dach could potentially land in Edmonton, where his brother Colton plays. Or Brady Tkachuk could reunite with his brother Matthew in Florida.

A family tie alone won’t win a trade, but it can be the little push that convinces a player to sign somewhere. Between cap math and team fit, these family angles are the kind of soft details that could sway choices this busy offseason.
