NHL Trade Talk Recap: Maple Leafs, Canadiens & Oilers’ Nurse
The Maple Leafs like Roy’s interview, Habs debate Kapanen’s future, and Nurse could be open to waiving his no-trade—big NHL summer moves.
This edition (June 3, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three stories from our posts today as the offseason heats up. The Maple Leafs are reportedly impressed by Patrick Roy in interviews. The Canadiens are torn on whether to trade young scorer Oliver Kapanen or keep him as their second-line fix. And the Oilers’ Darnell Nurse might be open to waiving some no-trade protection if the timing and fit are right. Three different stories, same theme: teams juggling big decisions while the rumour mill spins.

Maple Leafs Like What They Saw: Patrick Roy Interview Gets Thumbs Up
Word is that Roy’s interview with Toronto landed well. Elliotte Friedman called it “really good” and said Roy looks legit. He and Peter Laviolette are reportedly in this week’s mix, while Jeff Halpern might be out. Roy’s a big personality with real NHL credentials (Jack Adams winner, solid stints in Colorado and New York). That explains why the Maple Leafs poked the Islanders for an interview.
Roy brings intensity and a winning track record, but also some past friction with organizations. He’s brilliant at times and polarizing at others. If Toronto wants to inject fire and squeeze more from their roster, Roy could be an intriguing, high-upside — and risky — pick.

Canadiens’ Oliver Kapanen: Stay or Trade?
Is Oliver Kapanen on the bubble? He had a solid rookie year (22 goals) but barely played in the playoffs and didn’t produce, which raises questions about trust, even if GM Kent Hughes blames fatigue. Coaches bench guys for reasons beyond stats, and right now that trust looks shaky.
Other teams will want him because he’s young, cheap, can play centre and already scores. That’s perfect trade bait for clubs wanting low-risk upside. Montreal could flip him for a more proven middle-six piece without selling low.
The Habs might keep him because he fills the biggest hole (second-line centre), knows the system, and costs next to nothing. And continuity has value. If the playoff benching was a blip, giving him more minutes is the safer move. If Hughes can get a clear, realistic upgrade — a reliable two-way centre or a gritty winger plus depth — he’ll pull the trigger. If not, Kapanen stays, and they bet on growth.

Nurse Might Be Open to a Move, If the Timing’s Right
TSN’s Ryan Rishaug thinks Darnell Nurse could be tempted to waive some of his no-trade protection now. He could do that by giving Edmonton a shorter list of teams he’d accept, because next season his full no-move clause turns into a 10-team no-trade list and his leverage changes. If Nurse figures he won’t finish his deal in Edmonton, agreeing sooner lets him pick better landing spots. If he waits too long, he could end up stuck with a bunch of teams he didn’t want.
It still needs a team that actually wants him and a fair trade that isn’t just a salary dump. Nurse’s heavy minutes and ability to handle difficult matchups mean he still has real value, and the Oilers could fetch solid pieces back. But the new coach might also want to keep him. The bottom line is that Nurse holds the cards. Whether he moves comes down to timing, fits, and whether the right offer shows up.
