The Winnipeg Jets Have a Humongous Connor Hellebuyck Problem

The Winnipeg Jets have a massive problem when it comes to Connor Hellebuyck and a trade is looking more and more likely.

The Winnipeg Jets are quickly becoming one of the most intriguing teams to watch this offseason, and much of that centers around growing speculation involving star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.

While there’s no confirmation of a formal trade request, the noise is getting louder that he has submitted a list. So too, reports indicate that Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is at least listening to calls, and teams around the league are checking in. As Darren Dreger noted, “where there’s smoke, there’s often fire,” suggesting this situation is worth monitoring closely.

Hellebuyck’s frustration at the end of the season seems to be just the start of what feels like an inevitable trade. After the 2025-26 campaign fell short of expectations, the superstar netminder made it clear he wasn’t satisfied, raising questions about his previous confidence in his commitment to the team long-term. He signed to stay in Winnipeg, thinking this was a Cup contender — and for a minute it was. Then things fell apart. Now there are concerns he’s unwilling to remain patient through a potential retool.

It’s Not Just Hellebuyck Wanting Out That’s The Problem

Moving Hellebuyck would give the Jets a chance to plug several holes. They are still searching for a legitimate second-line center and could use more size and edge on the blue line. Trading Hellebuyck, if seriously considered, could address some of those needs in one swing—but it would also create a massive hole in goal.

That’s the massive dilemma. Hellebuyck remains one of the league’s elite goaltenders, and trading him would fundamentally change the Jets’ chances of winning. Replacing him is not an easy task, if not next to impossible. And it’s unclear what Winnipeg’s plan would be if they went down that road.

Of course, when you factor in that Winnipeg has long been a destination that players don’t want to be traded to or sign in free agency, the odds that another goalie at the level of Hellebuyck will commit to the team as he did are low. Ownership has historically stood by its players and staff, but that’s not enough these days. Players want a nice place to live and play, and a chance to win.

For now, there’s no indication a deal is imminent. But with teams calling, Hellebuyck’s future is uncertain. Whether this leads to a blockbuster trade remains to be seen, but it’s trending that way.
