The Canadiens See Something Others Missed in Sasha Pastujov
Montreal’s trade for Sasha Pastujov won’t grab headlines, but the Canadiens may have found a forward worth developing.
The Montreal Canadiens getting Sasha Pastujov from the Anaheim Ducks is one of those trades that doesn’t scream “big splash.” However, it probably matters more than it looks on the surface—especially if you’re watching Montreal’s long game. Montreal acquired Pastujov from Anaheim on Monday, paying the Ducks with Sean Farrell. That’s the whole trade in one line, but the interesting part is what kind of player Pastujov is and what the Habs are trying to build.
Pastujov Is Looking for an NHL Chance
Pastujov is a 23-year-old forward who’s still looking for his first NHL opportunity. Last season in the AHL with San Diego, he put up 21 goals and 57 points in 71 games. That production is the kind of stat line that makes you think that the young forward can score and create offence. For the Canadiens, that’s a nice start when you’re trying to grow a pipeline of forward talent.
Pastujov is still a ways from the NHL, as he hasn’t played a game yet and will likely start in the AHL. So this isn’t Montreal chasing a quick fix. They’re betting on the future version of him.
Farrell Was Moveable Because the Canadiens Have the Time to Wait
That’s why this trade feels very “structure”-oriented. Farrell, a former fourth-round pick who had shown flashes but had not secured a regular NHL role. He is the type of asset you move when you think you can afford to wait on development. Montreal clearly believes Pastujov has a ceiling worth chasing, and they’re willing to let him get his minutes in the AHL. The question is whether he can improve the parts that separate “good prospect” from “can play in the NHL.”

There’s also the timing angle. Trades like this often happen when teams decide a prospect needs a different environment to take the next step. Pastujov’s AHL numbers suggest he’s already doing his job at that level, which means the Habs can spend the season working on his possible transition to the NHL. He’ll need to improve his decision-making, puck management, and ability to handle tougher matchups.
The Bottom Line Is That the Canadiens Are Taking a Chance on Potential
Montreal basically took a chance on a player with upside. They get a young scorer they can develop, and Farrell was the price. If Pastujov’s numbers keep climbing, Habs fans might end up liking how this one turned out.
This trade isn’t really about Pastujov being NHL-ready tomorrow. It’s about Montreal using its development system to create more possibilities.
