NHL Trade Talk Recap: Wild, Oilers, Maple Leafs & Jets’ Goalie Insurance
NHL Trade Talk Recap: Hughes’ contract plans, McDavid’s McKenna comments, and Skinner’s arrival raise big questions.
In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (July 28, 2026), we’re looking at some big contract and goalie notes. Quinn Hughes is headed for extension talks with the Wild, and it sounds like he wants to stay flexible. Will he tie a contract to what happens with Jack in New Jersey? The Oilers’ Connor McDavid commented about Gavin McKenna. Bit it is being read as a subtle nod to just how brutal Toronto’s pressure can be. And with the Jets, Winnipeg just added Stuart Skinner. That seems to mean that they want insurance and flexibility with Connor Hellebuyck in the mix.

Hughes Extension Talk: Sounds Flexible, But There’s a Catch
Michael Russo says the Wild and Quinn Hughes are meeting soon to talk contract terms. It sounds like Minnesota wants a longer deal (5-8 years), but Hughes is probably leaning toward something shorter. He’ll probably keep his options open for a bigger payday later.
The bigger twist is that Quinn may only be cool with staying in Minnesota if his brother Jack is locked in New Jersey. That could mean the Wild need to either trade for Jack or accept that Quinn might eventually bounce. Does that mean Minnesota could start looking at trading Quinn earlier than they’d like?

McDavid’s “Nice Kid” Take on McKenna
Connor McDavid spoke at the Zach Hyman Celebrity Classic and said that Gavin McKenna seems like a good kid and that he’ll be ready for Toronto. He’ll have Auston Matthews around as part of the support system. It wasn’t meant as drama. But anything McDavid says gets attention.
And the thing is, Toronto comes with major spotlight pressure. McDavid’s comments hit a nerve for some fans because they know the “do well, you’re a hero / don’t, and you’re gone” vibe. So while he was praising McKenna (and Matthews), you can read between the lines like he was acknowledging that Toronto pressure is a whole different beast.

Jets Add Skinner—So What About Hellebuyck?
The Winnipeg Jets just signed Stuart Skinner to a two-year, $7.5 million deal. The big question is whether this is basically insurance so they feel comfortable moving Connor Hellebuyck if the right trade comes along. Skinner’s hoping a fresh start helps him get back to his best, but Winnipeg also looks like they want real competition in net.
Hellebuyck is still the starter for now. But Skinner has been a “share the crease” guy before. For him, it’s not like he’d be totally out of place. If Skinner proves reliable, it gives Winnipeg more flexibility. There are still trade rumours floating around Hellebuyck.
