The Blue Jackets Trade Cam Atkinson to Flyers for Jakub Voracek

The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded Jakub Voracek to the Philadelphia Flyers for Cam Atkinson.

A story broken by Sporstnet insider Elliotte Friedman and confirmed by other sources, the Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers have made a trade. Cam Atkinson is going from the Blue Jackets to Flyers and Jakub Voracek is coming back the other way. It’s not clear yet what else is involved in the trade.

The Flyers were rumored to be looking to move Voracek this offseason. Hoping to remove his $8.25 million cap hit for the next three seasons, it’s not clear if the Blue Jackets will take the full brunt of that cap hit or if the Flyers will be retaining a bit of salary. Philadelphia has been busy over the past few days, moving Shayne Gostisbehere and adding Ryan Ellis and Rasmus Ristolainen. Voracek, 31, spent three years with the Blue Jackets during his first stint with the team before he was included in a blockbuster 2011 trade that sent him to the Flyers.

As for Atkinson, he was one of the few Blue Jackets players who really had no issues playing for Columbus. He was said to like being part of this team, but his $5.875 million cap hit for the next four seasons will go to the Flyers in the deal. Aaron Portzline reports, “But told Cam Atkinson did not request this trade. He was the longest-tenured Blue Jackets player, has extensive business interest and charitable interests in the community.”

Each Player Brings Something Different

Voracek has a higher ceiling for offence and is a top-six winger that the Blue Jackets know well. He is a steady playmaker but very well paid for what he offers. Atkinson has skills offensively but he also kills penalties. He has struggled to score in the past two seasons. Atkinson has scored 35 and 41 points in full seasons recently whereas Voracek has scored at a much higher clip. He posted 43 points in 53 games this past season.
