Sharks Open to Trade Options: 2 Landing Spots for Timo Meier

If the San Jose Sharks are open to trading Timo Meier, there could be a couple of NHL teams that make sense as a good fit.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun noted during his segment on Insider Trading(October 27) that the San Jose Sharks have told teams that pretty much everyone is available for trade except forward Tomas Hertl. That means a super-talented forward like Timo Meier is on the trade blocks and there will undoubtedly be teams showing interest prior to this year’s NHL Trade Deadline.

LeBrun explains:

“Listen, Mike Grier is the new GM, he didn’t take long to make significant changes last summer either and this is where he’s going to need to be creative. Brent Burns only had three teams he could be traded for last summer. He actually waived to go to Carolina which wasn’t one of the three teams. That Sharks’ payroll and roster right now has a bunch of guys, led by the likes of Erik Karlsson, with full no-move clauses, it’s going to be difficult for Mike Grier to enact the kind of change that he wants, but that’s his intention over the next couple years. ”

Hertl signed an eight-year $65.1 million contract extension with the Sharks in March and his deal carries a full no-movement clause for this season. That could be among the main reasons he’s not being shopped. As for why the Sharks would want to move on from Meier, that’s another story altogether. He is their most valuable trade asset — although defenseman Erik Karlsson is having a wonderful season — and as a pending RFA, he is under team control.

Timo Meier San Jose Sharks trade

Perhaps this is more about seeing what the market will offer for a player like Meier. Maybe, only if the Sharks get an offer they can’t refuse would they pull the trigger on a deal. The question becomes, are there teams out there willing to pay whatever the asking price will be? Meier has four goals and two assists in his last four games. Most of it is on the power play, but that’s not all bad and there are teams that would love to bolster their man-advantage numbers.

The teams with cap space and a potential willingness to make a move to add a player like Meier are limited. The Buffalo Sabres are certainly among the teams that could show interest. They are young, only getting better, and have a ton of cap space. They do need to save room for some bigger contracts coming down the pipeline for Owen Power, Dylan Cozens, Peyton Krebs, and Rasmus Dahlin, but they have room to do something.

There is some uncertainty about what the Detroit Red Wings will do with Dylan Larkin. If they sign him, Meier could make for a nice compliment. If the Red Wings lose Larkin and go with someone like Bo Horvat, they’ll have more cap flexibility to bring Meier in. If the Red Wings end up with neither Larkin or Horvat, someone like Meier could be important to help replace that production.
