NHL Trades and Rumors

Golden Knights May Oddly Have Too Many Goalies, Trade Likely

The Vegas Golden Knights might have to trade a goaltender seeing as they have too many and not enough cap space.

Thinking back to when the Vegas Golden Knights moved Marc-Andre Fleury and put all their eggs in the Robin Lehner basket, then found out Lehner was going to be on LTIR due to injury, it would be shocking to have predicted just a few months ago that the team would have too many goalies. Today, while the club would potentially like to keep all three of their netminders, they may actually have to make a move simply because their salary cap situation won’t allow the team to bring up Laurent Brossoit.

This means a trade out of Vegas might be imminent, especially when you look at the NHL marketplace and realize there are a number of teams who could use a viable goaltender.

Laurent Brossoit Vegas Golden Knights

Owen Krepps of Vegas Hockey Now speculates that teams might start reaching out to Vegas in an attempt to acquire a netminder. Meanwhile, Kevin Woodley of InGoal Magazine notes: “Vegas is about to have a problem by having too many goalies. Hill has played well, and Brossoit is now on an LTIR conditioning stint in the AHL. I’m curious to see what they do and does Toronto have the cap space or interest to add either of them,?”

The Golden Knights have Logan Thompson and Adin Hill as their goalie tandem while Laurent Brossoit isn’t back on the main roster yet. Because the Golden Knights don’t have the cap space to bring Brossoit back up, they could decide to trade someone to make the necessary room. Among the teams that could need a goalie are the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, and the Minnesota Wild.

Interestingly, Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff lists five goaltenders the Maple Leafs might be looking at but doesn’t list anyone from the Golden Knights. On his list are Joonas Korpisalo (Blue Jackets), James Reimer (Sharks), Jonathan Quick (Kings), Dan Vladar (Flames), and Anton Khudobin (Dallas Stars). The Chicago Blackhawks are a team that is rebuilding and isn’t looking to add assets when the plan is to dump or flip players before the NHL Trade Deadline. Could they be a team that takes on a goalie in the expectation that could move him in a couple of months?

There are some interesting questions that teams will have to ask themselves and answer before the Golden Knights will be able to move a body out.
