Ryan Reynolds Confirms He’s Trying to Buy Ottawa Senators

Actor Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that he is interested in purchasing the Ottawa Senators NHL franchise.

Actor Ryan Reynolds has confirmed that he’s trying to be part of a group of investors looking to take over ownership of the Ottawa Senators. Speaking with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, Fallon asked about the rumors of his interest in the NHL franchise and he confirmed that he is trying to get in on a deal that would see him as an owner of the team that officially went up for sale this past week.

“I am trying to (buy the Senators), it’s very expensive, so I need a partner with really deep pockets,” Reynolds said. “It’s called a consortium when you form a group to buy an entity, and it’s such a fancy way of saying, ‘I need a sugar mommy or a sugar daddy,’ and if that doesn’t happen I’ll buy a U.S. senator which everyone can afford.”

Saying that Canadians are born to love and play hockey, he noted he spent a lot of time in Ottawa and that he’s emotionally invested in being an owner if he can find the right group to help him purchase the club. “I grew up in Vancouver but I also grew up in Ottawa and I spent a long time in Vanier, which is a little town right outside Ottawa,” he said.

Reynolds admitted that the venture would be costly. Despite making upwards of $30 million per film and having a number of businesses (Mint Mobile and Aviation Gin) still doesn’t give him the bankroll to go in alone on investment on buying the Senators. At the same time, it would be worthwhile for any owner to ensure that they considered adding the actor to their ownership group. The promotional power he could offer alone would be worth letting him own a piece of the pie. He’s easily one of the most popular actors in the world and everything he touches seems to turn to gold.

This isn’t the first pro sports team Reynolds would be the owner of if this came to pass. Anyone who has watched the Wrexham documentary knows how genuine he is with his intentions to turn that team around and make it a profitable winner. If he were to buy into the Senators, fans are confident he will have good intentions and ensure that the team stays in Ottawa. He’ll want to ensure the long-term future of the club.
