Insider Lists Five Potential Goalie Trade Options for Maple Leafs

Frank Seravalli listed five potential trade options the Toronto Maple Leafs might be looking at while trying to upgrade their goaltending.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are waiting on word of the severity of Ilya Samsonov’s injury. David Alter is among the reporters noting there should be an update at some point today. Alter says, “The good news is it appears he was doing some work on the ice this morning with goalie coach Curtis Sandford, which is certainly a good sign.” In the event that the goaltending situation remains unclear, the Maple Leafs may have to make a move. Jonas Siegel of The Athletic writes that head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters, “Timeline is “uncertain” — week to week at this point; he did go on the ice this morning to test things out.” Meanwhile, Matt Murray will take part in his first full practice on Wednesday after joining Tuesday’s morning skate.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff did a quick writeup of five goaltenders the Maple Leafs might be looking for if and when they scour the marketplace for goaltenders. Surprisingly, he doesn’t have the Vegas Golden Knights on his list — they are a team that is rumored to be ready to move a goalie for salary cap reasons. But, he does have five others on his list, many of which might be considered upgrades over what the team is currently working with.

His five were Joonas Korpisalo (Columbus Blue Jackets), James Reimer (San Jose Sharks), Jonathan Quick (Los Angeles Kings), Dan Vladar (Calgary Flames), and Anton Khudobin (Dallas Stars).

Seravalli notes that the Leafs are still awaiting word on Ilya Samsonov and his MRI and explains: “Even if Samsonov is sidelined for just a short period of time, there is no doubt the Leafs spent part of Sunday analyzing the goaltending market to see what might be out there given Murray’s injury history.” He adds, “It’s difficult to count on Murray being upright now for any extended period.”

Does this mean the Maple Leafs aren’t confident in the decision they made at the start of the season when it comes to their netminding situation? Are they thinking that they need an upgrade regardless of the health concerns for Samsonov and Murray?
