Proposed Rangers-Wild Trade Could End Drury’s Career if Botched
One scribe has proposed a potentially huge trade between the Rangers and Wild, but if botched, it could end Drury’s GM career.
Arthur Staple of The Athletic recently explored a potential blockbuster trade between the New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild, one that could have significant long-term implications for Rangers GM Chris Drury. The proposed deal would send young defenseman K’Andre Miller to the Wild in exchange for veteran blue-liner Jonas Brodin.
Staple admits to things with this trade. First, it’s potentially and long shot and not imminent because Brodin is on injured reserve. Second, if Drury makes the deal straight up, “trading K’Andre Miller straight up for a player seven years older seems like a career-ender for Drury.”
Why Would the Rangers Trade Miller?
Staple argues that Brodin, 31, is a proven top-pairing defender who plays over 22 minutes a night and has been a stabilizing force for Minnesota for the past 13 seasons. Meanwhile, the Rangers face a critical decision regarding Miller, who is expected to seek a significant raise from his current $3.872 million salary as a pending restricted free agent.
Miller has struggled this season, and Drury must be reconsidering the idea of offering him a long-term, lucrative deal.
With the Wild leading the Central Division at 19-5-4, they remain firmly in the playoff hunt. They could be open to adding a player who can contribute, and K’Andre Miller, despite his struggles, may just need a fresh start to regain his form. Moving him to the Wild in a contract year could be a good fit for both sides.
While his age and current injury (he’s on injured reserve) may raise concerns, Brodin’s $6 million contract for the next three years offers cost certainty, making him an appealing option for a New York team that has threatened to shake things up and already moved Jacob Trouba. Pairing Brodin with Adam Fox could solidify the Rangers’ defense for years to come.
Staple warns that this trade could be a career-altering move for Drury if he doesn’t get more than just Brodin. Moving Miller, a 24-year-old with high potential, will be viewed as a major risk. It’s imperative Drury get a solid return.
