Patrice Bergeron Signs 1-Year Deal With Boston Bruins

Patrice Bergeron has signed a one-year deal to return to the Boston Bruins for the 2022-23 NHL season.

Forward Patrice Bergeron is returning for at least one more season with the Boston Bruins. An announcement was made Monday morning that the veteran signed for one year at a base salary of $2.5 million base, with another $2.5 million in performance bonuses. With Bergeron’s contract structured the way it is for performance incentives (which he should attain), Boston has the ability to push some of that bonus overage into next season if they exceed that $82.5 million cap ceiling.

The deal breaks down as follows:

  • Base Salary: $1.5m
  • Signing Bonus $1M
  • 10 Games Played Bonus $2.5M
  • Total $5M
  • No Move Clause.

A five-time Selke Trophy winner, Bergeron is the best defensive forward in NHL history and at the age of 36, just had one of the best seasons of his 18-year career. He broke almost every 5v5 on-ice stat record in 2021-22 and the Bruins expectedly waited for him to decide whether he wanted to make one more run with the team.

After being drafted in 2003, Bergeron has 400 goals and 582 assists — all with the Bruins. This upcoming season will be his 19th with the organization. With Bergeron signed at a $2.5 million Cap Hit, the Bruins have $2.3 million still in remaining cap space w/ 22 players (12F/8D/2G) on the active roster.

There is plenty of reaction to this deal but one thing is clear, this was not about the money for Bergeron— it’s about helping his team try to win.
