Oilers Could Get Mike Smith Back for Tuesday’s Game vs. Maple Leafs

The Edmonton Oilers might be getting goaltender Mike Smith back in goal for Tuesday’s matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

According to a report by Jason Gregor of TSN 1260, the Edmonton Oilers might be getting goaltender Mike Smith back in time to play the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday evening. The veteran goaltender has been out for weeks with a somewhat mysterious injury and during his absence the Oilers have taken a turn for their worse as far as their record goes, having lost five straight games.

Smith was on the ice for the Oilers’ optional practice Sunday and the original timeline of mid-December seems to be accurate as far as a return to play goes.

The return can’t come soon enough. It’s not that Mikko Koskinen or Stuart Skinner have been terrible. In fact, outside of a late gaffe in the third period of Saturday’s game versus the Carolina Hurricanes, Koskinen was the reason the Oilers were still in the game. Unfortunately, the Oilers need to stop the bleeding and after getting off to an incredible start on the season have taken a terrible turn and lost a number of consecutive games. Smith’s play before going down to an injury was stellar and the Oilers are hoping that a change might spark the team or push them in the right direction.

All that said, Mike Smith’s return is not likely the long-term solution the Oilers need. There’s been plenty of talk that Edmonton will be looking to the trade market to try and find a goaltender, with Marc-Andre Fleury’s name being connected in trade rumors. It’s a goalie, another left-shot defenseman and a depth center the Oilers really need if they’re able to stay in the playoff conversation.

Still, Smith’s potential return is good news for a team that could really use some. They’ll be taking on a Toronto team that sits tied for first in the Atlantic Division.
