Oilers Fire Dave Tippett, Bring Woodcroft In as Coach

The Edmonton Oilers have fired head coach Dave Tippett and brought in AHL coach Jay Woodcroft to replace him.

The Edmonton Oilers have pulled the trigger on a coaching change. After weeks of speculation that Dave Tippett was on the hot seat, GM Ken Holland has finally seen enough after two more losses and said it’s time to try something else. The Oilers are close to not being a playoff team and bringing in a new voice is the one string left Holland can pull on to right the ship.

According to a report by Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic, Jim Playfair was also fired.

The Oilers started the 2021-22 season with one of the league’s best records. But a seven-game losing streak saw them shoot right back down to earth and slide just outside the playoff picture. There was talk just prior to a game against the Calgary Flames that Tippett was likely going to be removed, but a win against the Flames kept him in his position. The Oilers brought in Evander Kane and won four straight, signaling that perhaps things were turning around. Two straight losses in the first two games of an eight-games-in-13-days stretch meant trouble.

Jay Woodcroft Hired As Interim Coach

With Tippett having led the Oilers to one of the worst stretches in the NHL since December 1 (8-13-3), Jay Woodcroft is in as the Oilers’ new bench boss, coming up from Bakersfield. He has no NHL head coaching experience, but he’s been doing a masterful job with the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL.

It’s not clear if Woodcroft will stay the interim coach for the remainder of the season or if the Oilers will look to lock him up to a longer-term deal right away. Tippett was on the final year of his current contract and likely not returning next season based on his performance.
