When asked whether Makar’s massive new deal in Colorado might push Hughes’ price up too, Guerin actually steered away from comparing the two. He hinted that Hughes might be prioritizing something totally different. Most people think that’s code for wanting to play alongside his brothers. He also admitted he doesn’t fully know what Hughes wants. When someone pointed out the Wild are too all-in to just trade him if a deal doesn’t happen, Guerin’s response was that he can do whatever he wants. Not exactly the confident, “we’ve got this handled” energy fans were hoping for.

The honest read here is that this isn’t trending toward a quick resolution. Guerin insists he’s got a good relationship with Hughes and his camp and that they’re talking all the time. But he also pointed out that today’s stars near free agency don’t feel rushed to commit early. Hughes sounds like exactly that type. So while Guerin clearly wants to get a deal done, it’s looking more and more like Minnesota might be preparing for the possibility that it just doesn’t happen.

Could the Devils Trade Bratt to Make Room for Quinn Hughes?

New Jersey’s basically stuck in wait-and-see mode until Quinn Hughes decides his future. But everyone assumes he ends up there eventually, especially with the Devils also chasing Connor Hellebuyck in net. The problem is cap space. Hughes’ next deal is going to look Makar-sized, and pairing that with a top goalie means New Jersey needs real money freed up fast. That’s where Jesper Bratt comes in. He’s a legit 71-point winger who could realistically be moved without gutting the team’s identity, especially since Edmonton’s sitting there with exactly the kind of young talent and picks New Jersey would want back.

The proposed deal sends Bratt to Edmonton in exchange for Trent Frederic, top prospect Isaac Howard, and a trio of high draft picks. That’s basically the going rate for a top-tier winger these days. Edmonton gets an immediate top-six piece who can play with McDavid or Draisaitl right now. New Jersey gets cap relief, a cheap young scorer to replace Bratt’s production, and the draft capital to keep building around the Hughes brothers. It’s a big swing, but if Hughes really is heading to New Jersey, something like this might be exactly what has to happen to make the math work.

Andersen’s Out to Start the Season — What Do the Oilers Do Now?

Frederik Andersen’s going to miss the start of the season. That isn’t great news for an Oilers team that was counting on him for real veteran presence in net. So now the question is whether Edmonton goes shopping. If so, two familiar names stand out. Connor Ingram and Cam Talbot. Both former Oilers are still sitting unsigned this late in the summer. Ingram actually played well for Edmonton last year and even won the starting job heading into the playoffs, so bringing him back wouldn’t be the worst idea. Especially with Winnipeg possibly needing a goalie too if the Hellebuyck situation shakes something loose.

The catch is Edmonton’s already pretty stacked at goalie, so adding another name means someone’s getting squeezed out, waived, or sent down. That’s probably why guys like Ingram and Talbot haven’t jumped at a depth deal yet. Nobody wants to sign somewhere just to sit in the AHL. So really, this comes down to whether the Oilers actually go get outside help, or just trust Devon Levi and Tristan Jarry to hold things down until Andersen’s back.
