NHL Trade Talk: The Podcast – Episode 33: Hellebuyck, Makar, and More
This week’s NHL Trade Talk podcast covers the Connor Hellebuyck trade request, Cale Makar’s new contract, and the Edmonton Oilers injuries.
On this week’s edition of NHL Trade Talk: The Podcast, we break down a busy week of NHL news. Our plans for the show got scrapped for the bigger stories of the past few days, including a goaltender controversy, a record-breaking contract, and some unfortunate injury news.
In this episode:
Connor Hellebuyck makes his trade request public. The Winnipeg Jets have responded and now it’s a matter of what teams will be interested and if the goalie will be moved before the regular season begins. Hellebuyck revealed he’d privately requested the move months earlier but wanted to confirm it publicly with training camp approaching. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff responded on the Jets’ behalf, acknowledging the situation but offering no timeline for a resolution. With camp opening soon, the pressure is on to find a fit before puck drop.
Cale Makar signed a record-breaking 8-year extension at $20.4 million per season. Why this deal, what will be the fallout, and a few “would you rather” conversations. Makar is the first player in league history to earn at least $20 million a season. The deal reshapes the market for elite defensemen and reopens the debate over who’s next.
The Edmonton Oilers revealed that four players won’t be ready for training camp and with at least two of those players out, should the team be concerned? These injuries raise early questions about the team’s depth heading into the season.
This week, Jim, Kyle, and Vivek dive into three big stories across the NHL: the public Connor Hellebuyck trade request, Cale Makar’s record-breaking new contract, and the Edmonton Oilers statement that four players will not be ready for camp because of injuries.
Oh, and we get into some PTO talk and Sam Montembeault trade rumors.
Needless to say, the hockey world got busy this week.
