NHL Trade Talk Recap: Jets, Flyers, Oilers & Maple Leafs Troubles?

Hellebuyck’s holdout, Konecny trade rumours and a Maple Leafs collapse headline today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap for October 16.

Today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap for October 16, 2026, has three storylines. They are all about leverage, rumours, and a game that got away. Connor Hellebuyck might be ready to end his holdout, but the Jets reportedly don’t want him back. The Flyers’ slow start has linked the Oilers to Travis Konecny if Philadelphia shakes things up. And in Toronto, Kirill Marchenko scored a hat trick, but the Maple Leafs still blew a lead and lost in overtime.

Hellebuyck May Want Back In, but the Jets Reportedly Aren’t Interested

Darren Dreger says there’s truth to the chatter that Connor Hellebuyck might end his holdout to stop losing money, but Winnipeg isn’t interested in having him back. The Jets suspended him without pay, the league backs their right to do it, and they’re 4-1-2 with Stuart Skinner and Clay Stevenson in net. Any return would also need a conversation between the league and the players’ association.

Hellebuyck’s leverage keeps shrinking. Teams that have looked at him are worried about his conditioning since nobody has seen him skate, and his numbers last season were among his worst. With the Jets not rushing and offers drying up, this is not going the way he hoped.

Could Travis Konecny End Up in Edmonton If the Flyers Shake Things Up?

Edmonton’s on a roll, Philadelphia’s not, and you can guess what that means: people are already talking trade. Word is the Flyers are getting frustrated with Travis Konecny and might ask him to waive his no-trade clause, and Bleacher Report’s Joe Yerdon put the Oilers on his list of possible landing spots. Konecny’s 29 and in year two of an eight-year, $70 million deal, and he’s exactly the kind of top-six winger Edmonton’s been hunting for to play with McDavid and Draisaitl.

The catch is money and assets. Edmonton is close to the cap, so a deal would mean sending salary back. Yerdon notes the Oilers don’t have much prospect capital to offer. Still, McDavid left cap flexibility for moments like this, so Bowman can use it while the championship window is open.

Marchenko’s Hat Trick Isn’t Enough as the Leafs Blow a Lead and Lose in OT

The Leafs lost 5-4 in overtime to Buffalo after leading 4-2 going into the third. Kirill Marchenko did his part with his first hat trick as a Maple Leaf, including a between-the-legs goal, after scoring just one in his first seven games with Toronto. He’d said that morning he could play better, then delivered in a big way.

The night had some worrying moments too. Gavin McKenna played just 6:36 and didn’t see the ice after the middle of the second. Jim Hiller admitted it was his decision and that he probably should have gotten him out earlier in the third. John Tavares also left in the third after an awkward collision with Josh Norris, and Hiller had no update afterward.
