John Tavares will miss some time for the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, he has been ruled out week to week. The team is calling it a lower-body injury. Gavin McKenna will be promoted to the first-unit power play with Tavares injured.
Tavares has recorded two goals and five assists for seven points in seven games to start the season. He had two assists against Buffalo on Thursday before exiting with the injury. Tavares collided with Sabres forward Josh Norris early in the third period. Tavares was watching the play and didn’t see Norris skating into him. As Norris fell, he took out Tavares’ legs.
Dr. Harjas Grewal — who frequently comments on the nature of hockey injuries — wrote in his tweet, “Not a great angle but looks like some inward stress to the right knee (and maybe ankle too). Mechanism most often causes MCL injuries and/or high ankle sprains (timeline depends on severity, often 4-6 weeks).”
Maple Leafs lines at practice:
Roslovic – Matthews – Nylander
Cowan – Paul – Marchenko
McKenna – Scissons – Groulx
Duhaime – Blueger – MacEwen
