NHL Trade Talk Recap: Canucks, Maple Leafs & Oilers Come and Go
Canucks back Pettersson but push accountability, Berube lands on his feet, and Oilers fire Knoblauch in a busy NHL shake-up day.
This edition (May 14, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes a big day in NHL hirings and firings. The Canucks’ new bosses want Pettersson to stay, but they showed him the door to accountability. The Maple Leafs dumped Berube, and he’s probably fine. Can he get another short-term fixer or staff role if he wishes? The Oilers cut ties with head coach Kris Knoblauch after a messy post-season exit as they hunt for a new coach.

Canucks Tell Pettersson: We Want You — But Come Ready
New Canucks brass made it clear they want Elias Pettersson to stick around and bounce back. He’s not “untouchable,” but his success is definitely a priority. The Sedins and new GM Ryan Johnson emphasized preparation, culture, and leadership. Then they basically told him to hit the summer hard and show up ready to lead.
They didn’t rule out moves, but there’s no sign he’s being shopped. Pettersson signed a long-term contract and says Vancouver feels like home. For now, it’s support plus accountability: help him reset, see if he returns to form, and only if that fails does the trade chatter get louder.

Berube’s Got Pushed Out of Toronto — Now What for Him?
Losing the Maple Leafs job looks wild on paper, but Craig Berube isn’t ruined. He’s a Stanley Cup-winning coach with a tough, old-school vibe that plenty of teams still want when a locker room needs a reset. Toronto’s a brutal job; sometimes being untethered from that circus actually helps a coach more than staying and getting chewed up.
Expect him to land somewhere if he chooses. He could get a short-term fixer job, an associate role on a contender, or a chill advisory spot. Or he might just sit and wait for the right opening. Front offices know how to read context, and Berube’s rep gets reclassified, not erased.

Oilers Give Knoblauch the Boot
The Oilers pulled the trigger and fired Kris Knoblauch (and assistant Mark Stuart) on Thursday after a quick review of the season. The team said thanks for the work, but changes were needed. The move follows a disappointing first-round exit and leaks that Edmonton had already been after Bruce Cassidy while Knoblauch was still under contract, which basically made things awkward beyond repair.
Knoblauch did get the team to back-to-back Cup Finals, but no parade. Now there’s no job either. Edmonton’s already hunting for a new coach, and Cassidy’s name keeps popping up as the front-runner — expect more updates as they try to make it official.
