Stan Bowman Defends Oilers’ Decision to Fire Kris Knoblauch

Stan Bowman met with the media on Thursday and talked the decision to fire Kris Knoblauch, and the timing amid online rumors.

Edmonton Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman addressed the media Thursday, just hours after the organization fired head coach Kris Knoblauch and assistant Mark Stuart. He did his best to explain the decision, the scrutiny surrounding the timing, and ultimately defend the move while acknowledging the difficulty of the circumstances.

Bowman opened his availability by thanking both coaches, calling them “excellent coaches” and “tremendous people.” He described the decision as a difficult one that was not made lightly, but ultimately necessary after a thorough end-of-season review.

The Oilers’ disappointing first-round playoff exit in 2025-26 proved to be the final straw. Bowman cited a lack of consistency throughout the season as the primary issue. “It wasn’t just a slow start or maybe a tough stretch in the middle of the year… those things happen to all teams,” Bowman said. “But we didn’t have a lot of ups this year. We just felt a different voice was needed.”

When asked about extending Knoblauch only to fire him before the new deal kicked in, Bowman explained the extension was earned based on the team’s previous success, including two trips to the Stanley Cup Final. However, this season’s regression — particularly defensively — changed the organization’s outlook.

Bowman Avoids Comments on His Handling of the Situation

Bowman pushed back against widespread criticism regarding the timing and leaked reports linking the Oilers to Bruce Cassidy while Knoblauch was still employed. He emphasized that the organization conducted a comprehensive review involving conversations with players, front office staff, and detailed analysis of underlying metrics.

“We committed to everyone that we were going to do a fair review, and that’s what we did,” Bowman stated. “In that process, we came to the decision that a change was needed. As far as these other rumors and speculation about how exactly things played out, I don’t think it’s appropriate to go into that.”

He added that there was “certainly no disrespect intended” and that he wanted to speak with Knoblauch in person before anything became official.

What’s Next for the Oilers?

Looking ahead, Bowman confirmed the Oilers will launch a wide-ranging search for their next head coach. The organization is looking for a candidate who can install a stronger system identity and improve consistency, especially on the defensive side of the puck. Noting they will make some roster changes, they won’t be changing over a big chunk of the roster, so it will be important that this new coach can get more out of the top stars, core group, and depth guys that are on the team.

When asked if this was a situation where management and Knoblauch didn’t see eye to eye or weren’t on the same page, he noted there was an element of truth to that, but it’s common around all NHL teams; it wasn’t an overriding factor, and he would never step in and tell a coach how to deploy his players.

He noted that while Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl will be consulted during the search for a new coach, they will not participate in interviews or have the final say on the hire. They don’t want to pick the coach, he noted. Bowman expects the search to take anywhere from one to a few weeks.

Bowman also accepted some responsibility for the team’s shortcomings, admitting certain roster decisions did not pan out as hoped. He stressed that improvement will be required across all areas — management, coaching, and players — if Edmonton hopes to end its Stanley Cup drought.
