NHL Trade Talk Recap: Canadiens, Senators & Maple Leafs Keeping Hope

Canadiens have positives in loss to Sabres, Brady Tkachuk trade rumours, and Maple Leafs hope to convince Matthews to say in Toronto

This edition (May 7, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes a quick roundup of three key posts today: a tightly contested Game 1 saw the Sabres’ speed put the Canadiens on their heels. Around the league, the Maple Leafs’ offseason just turned do-or-die as new GM John Chayka tries to convince Auston Matthews to stick around. And trade chatter keeps the Senators’ Brady Tkachuk in the rumour mill.

Sabres’ Speed Made Montreal Play Catch-Up — But the Habs Didn’t Quit

Buffalo came out hot, and Montreal spent the opening getting run around. The Sabres’ speed through the neutral zone turned turnovers into rushes all night, and they cashed in on the power play while Alex Lyon did his thing with 26 saves. Young guns Zach Benson and Josh Doan looked like they belonged, and Montreal never really stopped playing from behind.

The Habs battled back. Nick Suzuki led the charge, and the Dach–Suzuki–Slafkovsky line created real chances and traffic in front. The problem was, every time Montreal looked like it might take over, another sloppy play or missed clear ruined the momentum — Lane Hutson slipping on the opening goal, and that failed clearing before Byram’s PPG were killers.

If the Canadiens want Game 2, it’s basic: stop giving Buffalo free rushes. Clean up neutral-zone puck management, tighten up gap control on the blue line, and kill penalties better. Jakub Dobes can keep them in it, but Montreal needs fewer freebies and an early goal to calm things down — then they’ve got a real shot.

Can Chayka Convince Matthews to Stay?

Toronto’s offseason just went from tense to do-or-die, and Auston Matthews is the whole reason why. New GM John Chayka’s first job is simple: make Matthews believe this team can win now or trade him and reboot if that ship has sailed.

If Matthews isn’t sold, the Maple Leafs should at least try. Step one: Ditch the coach or at least give Matthews a system that lets him score instead of grinding in the defensive end every shift — a coach who lets him be a weapon, not a wrench. Step two: Add a reliable two-way center so Matthews can start more shifts in the O-zone and stop babysitting the middle. Finally, Step three: Be bold but not silly by making moves that actually improve the roster now, not flashy trades that leave gaps elsewhere.

Finally, show a plan: who they’ll draft, who’s staying, who’s coaching — Matthews wants a roadmap, not slogans. Get these basics right and the chatter quiets. Fail, and the idea of Matthews walking gets louder — and that would be a franchise-defining problem.

Is Boston Actually Eyeing Brady Tkachuk?

Seems like the trade rumour mill won’t quit: one reporter thinks the Bruins would be all over Brady Tkachuk if Ottawa ever put him up for grabs. Tkachuk says he’s committed and hates the “wants out” chatter, but the whispers keep rolling. That’s partly because Ottawa flamed out in the first round, and Tkachuk went scoreless in the playoffs.

Teams would line up at the border for a player like Tkachuk. He’s big, physical, and a real game-changer. The Bruins interest is plausible, but whether they’ve got the assets Ottawa would want is a whole other question.
