Scribe Suggests Oilers Go After “Bargain” Goaltender Trade

The Edmonton Oilers might be looking at changing up their goaltending this summer, which leaves one very important question: who would they go after? If GM Stan Bowman ultimately decides to move on from one of (or both) Tristan Jarry and/or Connor Ingram, the Oilers need a replacement.

Allan Mitchell of The Athletic suggested three names, but liked one option the best. Calling him a “bargain” potential goalie, Mitchell liked Filip Gustavsson over other options like Jordan Binnington or Mackenzie Blackwood.

He writes:

“Filip Gustavsson of the Minnesota Wild is regarded as the most impressive goaltender who could be in play. His cap hit ($6.8 million for five years beginning in the fall) is a bargain if he can deliver. In 50 games this season, he posted a .914 save percentage for the Wild, good enough for top-15 among NHL goalies who played 1,000 or more minutes.”

The Wild aren’t faring so well in their series with the Colorado Avalanche, but that’s not because they aren’t a good team with solid netminding. The Avs are simply red hot, and Colorado was going to be a tough out. The Wild, who also have Jesper Wallstedt in their system, might be able to fill other holes by moving Gustavsson, and the Oilers should be intrigued by a 27-year-old with solid numbers.

When it come to Binnington, the veteran’s numbers were worse than Ingram’s. Blackwood might be a solid option, but he’s not played a playoff game this season and the games he did play in 2024-25 saw him post a .892 save percentage in seven games. His 2.71 GAA was right in line with Gustavsson’s numbers from that same season.

Would the Wild consider moving Gustavsson and if so, what would they want in return?
