NHL Trade Talk Recap: Canadiens, Senators & Flames Stiffed

Montreal may move Adam Engstrom, Ottawa needs to solve Drake Batherson’s contract, and a bigger issue is emerging for Canadian teams.

In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (August 19, 2026), we share three stories that point to the same overarching theme. Teams are facing real, high-stakes roster and contract pressure right now. In Montreal, there’s talk that the Canadiens are “open to” moving Adam Engstrom, but it doesn’t sound like they’ll do it unless the return actually makes sense. Across the border, American stars are getting more comfortable with requesting trades out of Canada. These are starting to look like more than just random incidents, and they’re putting extra pressure on Canadian teams to keep people happy with money, stability, and winning. In Ottawa, Drake Batherson’s contract talks are getting urgent because the Senators need a deal locked in soon—otherwise they risk losing him for nothing or having to move him rather than just sign him long-term.

Engstrom “shopping” watch: real interest, but not for cheap

So are the Canadiens actually shopping Adam Engstrom, or is this just the usual summer rumours? The talk is that other teams have checked in and Montreal is “open to” trading him, but it doesn’t sound like they’ll take any random offer. The key takeaway from Basu’s reporting is that Montreal thinks Engstrom has real value, so if a team wants him, they’ll probably have to pay.

The reason this could be legit is Montreal’s defence logjam. There are a few guys basically locked in, and Engstrom is likely fighting for limited third-pairing minutes or even a press-box role. But the counterpoint is that Engstrom’s development is trending up fast (Laval numbers, NHL call-ups, and growing interest from scouts). Montreal probably won’t panic. The bottom line is that they may listen, but they will likely move him only if the return is worth it.

American stars want out of Canada more often—here’s why (and what it means)

Lately it feels like a pattern is building. More American NHL stars are asking to be traded out of Canadian teams, or even quietly putting Canada on their no-trade lists. And it’s not just random drama. It’s tied to a bigger shift. The U.S. hockey pipeline is stronger than it used to be, with the NCAA and USA Hockey pumping out elite talent, so players have more options and more reasons to stay home.

The Calgary Flames in 2022 are basically the best example of how brutal this can be. They lost Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, and the fallout was immediate. The uncomfortable question now for Canadian teams is whether they should even draft American players. But the better answer is they don’t have to stop. They just have to be competitive, make the money and stability work, and build an environment where players don’t feel like they need to escape.

Batherson contract talks: Ottawa needs a deal soon, one way or another

The Ottawa Senators and Drake Batherson are in contract talks, but there’s still a gap between what he wants and what Ottawa’s offering. Batherson’s current deal is winding down, and the Senators ideally want everything finalized before September 15 so they can sign him to an eight-year deal. After the new CBA kicks in, the max length drops to seven.

Batherson seems like he wants to stay in Ottawa long-term, and the team definitely wants that too since he’s been a huge part of the offence (especially with Tim Stützle). But Ottawa also can’t risk losing him for nothing, so if they can’t find common ground, they may have to seriously shop him around or even do a sign-and-trade situation to get value before it gets too late.
