Montreal Has a Decision to Make on Adam Engstrom—and It Isn’t Easy

Montreal may have a crowded blue line, but David Reinbacher’s rise could make moving one prospect much harder than it looks.

So… are the Montreal Canadiens really shopping Adam Engstrom, or is this just the usual summer smoke? The latest rumour is that rival teams have checked in on Engstrom, and Montreal is apparently “open to” moving him. But the attitude in Montreal is guarded. They won’t take just anything for him.

If Basu’s report is accurate, Montreal actually thinks Engstrom has real value, which basically means any team that wants him would probably have to pay. And that’s the big question: would a contender-style team really give up something notable for a young left-handed blueliner who’s still more of a prospect-to-now guy than a plug-and-play NHL starter?

There Are Reasons to Believe These Rumours Might Have Some Substance

What makes this feel a little believable is Montreal’s defence situation right now. The team own a bunch of blue-chip names basically locked in as NHL regulars—Lane Hutson, Noah Dobson, Mike Matheson, Kaiden Guhle, and Alexandre Carrier. That leaves only a couple spots, or maybe three at most, for the rest of the group. So when you look at it that way, Engstrom might be stuck competing for a third-pairing role, or even just battling for reps versus sitting as the extra guy.

But here’s the counterpoint: Engstrom’s development sounds like it’s going in the right direction fast. He’s been tearing it up with the Laval Rocket. He put up 10 goals and 34 points in 45 games last season, then earned call-ups and even got into 15 NHL games.

Scouts seem to like him too. He’s been called the best LHD in Montreal’s prospect pool and described as reliable on both ends. That’s exactly the kind of player other teams start circling, because that’s usually when teams start wondering if a prospect is ready to become a real NHL regular.

Would the Canadiens Even Consider Moving Him?

So what’s really happening? My guess is that Montreal is at least listening to offers but isn’t eager to move him. If they don’t like what they’re hearing, Engstrom stays put and keeps competing in camp.

And honestly, with how crowded that back end is, it would make sense for Montreal to be open to a move—just not a “cheap” one.
