NHL Trade Talk Recap: Canadiens, Flyers, Oilers & McDavid’s a Target
Montreal faces a tougher Atlantic battle, veteran UFAs wait, and the Flyers continue chasing a franchise-changing star.
In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (July 17, 2026), we look at three recaps that all land on the same basic truth about the NHL right now. It’s not just about talent; it’s about timing and risk. Montreal’s good, but the Atlantic Division is tough and getting back to the playoffs will be a grind even if their roster stays strong. Meanwhile, a surprising bunch of veteran UFAs are still waiting not because they can’t play, but because age and inconsistent production make teams hesitant to lock in long-term deals. And across the league, the Flyers are basically saying “we’re going for it.” They are willing to use their assets to keep hunting a real star because if the big window opens, they want to be ready to pounce.

Canadiens Aren’t Done Yet — They Have to Survive the Atlantic
The Canadiens proved last season they can hang with the best. They actually made a deep playoff run and reached the Eastern Conference Final, which is huge. But now the tough part starts: doing it again is way harder than surprising people once.
Their biggest challenge probably isn’t talent. The Atlantic Division is packed, and every team thinks they can make the playoffs. There are no easy nights and every point matters. Montreal’s path forward is mostly about their young core improving and building on what already works. Players like Suzuki, Caufield, and Hutson continue to grow. The next wave, like Slafkovsky and Demidov, are coming along too. They can absolutely get back to contention. But in the Atlantic, “possible” doesn’t mean “guaranteed.”
The Canadiens Are Good. The Atlantic Division Doesn’t Care.
Why So Many Veteran UFAs Are Still Waiting
There’s been a ton of NHL spending already. Over $1.4 billion has been committed since July 1, and hundreds of contracts have been signed. But a bunch of actually useful veteran players are still sitting there, waiting to be picked up. The weird part isn’t that these guys can’t play. It’s that some of them come with “expiry dates” front offices don’t want to gamble on.
Patrick Kane, Vladimir Tarasenko, and Reilly Smith are all still producing. But the age tax makes teams nervous about signing long term. And for some players, it’s not even just age. It’s how unpredictable they’ve been. Logan Stanley is kind of the middle example. He’s coming off a breakout, but if the asking price and length get too high, teams might wait you out until your market shrinks. Overall, this isn’t the league rejecting talent. It’s teams being way more picky about how much risk they’ll take on for real contracts, especially late in the offseason.

Flyers Want a Star—and They’re Not Shy About It
If the Flyers’ failed Leo Carlsson offer sheet showed anything, it’s that Danny Briere and Philly want a big-time star. And they’ve got the tools to keep trying. They have young talent, cap space, and draft picks. So it doesn’t really feel like they’re ready to just “settle” and call it a day.
There’s also talk that Connor McDavid could be a future target, with former NHLer Todd Fedoruk saying he’s heard McDavid might want Philly. Of course, while McDavid is still under contract with Edmonton, any direct outreach would be tampering—but the bigger point is that if Edmonton’s window stumbles again, teams like the Flyers will absolutely be ready to swing.
