As per a report over at Forever Blue Shirts, watch for the New York Rangers to start making moves to add an impact player to their roster. At least, listen for a lot of chatter that they might. According to the report, with some money coming off the Rangers books and the team having around $18 million in cap space, “there’s plenty of space to add a superstar and do some housekeeping.”
The article claims:
Here’s what I was told just a week ago by a well placed source, the Rangers have too many highly rated prospects and all are not going to play here. The expectation is if they don’t make a move at this deadline, the Rangers will be aggressive in the offseason.
Essentially, the idea here is that the Rangers are willing to move some of their young, potential prospect stars to land a star of today that can immediately give the Rangers a formidable team. With so much talk surrounding names like Patrik Laine and Pierre-Luc Dubois, there’s chatter these are two names the team might be looking at.
The idea of Laine in the Rangers top six is scary. With Alexis Lafreniere, Mika Zibanejad, Artemi Panarin, Ryan Strome and Kaapo Kakko already there, Laine puts them over the top. Or, if the Rangers aren’t sold on Strome as a long-term center fit, and thus decide to move him, they could send him out in a trade, bring back Dubois and have their center.
Both Laine and Dubois wouldn’t likely shy away from the opportunity to join a team like New York and specifically, speculation is that the reason Dubois wants out is because he’s looking for a role in a more prominent hockey market. New York and the Rangers would certainly qualify.
Who Would You Rather Have?
It’s possible but unlikely the Rangers have a shot at landing both players. So the question becomes, if there’s anything to this chatter, who would the Rangers be better served to chase after?
And, what prospects should the team be willing to move to land one of these two big names?
