The New Jersey Devils have made a significant trade, acquiring forward Tyler Toffoli from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Yegor Sharangovich and a 2023 3rd Round Draft Pick. The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Tom Fitzgerald and it might be among the first of a few Flames players being moved by GM Craig Conroy.
Toffoli, 31, is coming off a stellar season with Calgary, where he recorded a career-high 73 points (34 goals, 39 assists). Notably, he set new personal bests in goals, assists, and power-play goals (10) and he will bring size and scoring ability to the Devils’ lineup.
The forward has one year remaining on his current contract, which he signed with the Montreal Canadiens. The deal carries a cap hit of $4,250,000, with $3,500,000 in cash due for the 2023-24 season.
In return, the Flames receive Yegor Sharangovich and a 2023 3rd Round Draft Pick. Sharangovich, a fifth-round pick by the Devils in the 2018 NHL Draft, has shown promise during his time with New Jersey. In 205 games played over three seasons, he tallied 106 points (53 goals, 53 assists) and contributed to the team’s offensive production. While the Devils part ways with Sharangovich, they gain an established scorer in Toffoli.
Devils Looking to Take Another Step This Season
This was the second significant trade for the day for the Devils who earlier acquired a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft from San Jose in exchange for goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. The trades demonstrate the Devils’ commitment to improving their roster and addressing their needs. By acquiring Toffoli, they bolster their offensive capabilities and add a player with a proven track record of scoring. The Flames, on the other hand, acquire a young talent in Sharangovich and a draft pick that provides future value.
