Miller Trade to Rangers Reportedly Falls Apart Last Minute
A trade involving J.T. Miller almost took place on Saturday, but a deal between the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks fell apart.
The Vancouver Canucks are playing forward J.T. Miller tonight against the Edmonton Oilers, but that wasn’t a given considering the Canucks were extremely close to trading Miller to the New York Rangers on Saturday. Elliotte Friedman reported that Miller was set to be pulled from the lineup as he was the centerpiece of a potential trade. That trade, reportedly with the Rangers, fell apart in the final minutes.
Miller’s agent, Brian Bartlett, confirmed that the player has not requested or demanded a trade, but it is believed Canucks’ management is trying to make a move.
Friedman revealed that trade discussions between the Canucks and the New York Rangers had been progressing but ultimately fell through. “I believe J.T. Miller was set to be scratched for the game against the Oilers because trade talks were advancing,” Friedman reported. “However, that trade is off right now.”
Miller, who holds a full no-move clause in his contract has the leverage to block a trade, but it’s not clear if he’s the reason the deal didn’t happen. The Rangers appeared to be a leading contender, but they were not the only team linked to Miller trade talks.
Adding to the speculation, three AHL forwards in the Rangers organization were scratched on Saturday, potentially expected to be part of the Miller deal. Those players were Adam Sykora, Benoit-Olivier Groulx, and Jaroslav Chmelar. Rick Dhaliwal is reporting not all players were scratched for that reason, but the rumors picked up speed when Dhaliwal indicated two of the scratches were directly tied to the Miller talks.
Will a Miller Deal to the Rangers Eventually Get Done?
This isn’t the first time Vancouver and New York have explored a deal for Miller. Earlier this year, the Canucks reportedly declined a trade centered around Mika Zibanejad for Miller, and it sounded like the Canucks were focused on Rangers defenseman Braden Schneider.
While no trade is imminent, insiders agree this is a situation worth watching.
