Why Tortorella is Making Max Domi a Healthy Scratch vs. Panthers

Saying, “I’m not going to get into it… it’s a healthy scratch”, it seems clear why Max Domi is being pulled from the Blue Jackets lineup.

In what is believed to be a response to two games were forward Max Domi has lost his cool on the ice, Columbus Blue Jackets’ head coach John Tortorella has decided enough is enough, and is scratching the forward from the lineup against the Florida Panthers.

The Blue Jackets aren’t unfamiliar with media covering the benching and scratching of their players. It’s been a trend all season. But, this situation appears to be a little different. This move comes immediately following some major infractions being handed out to a player that took some bad penalties and made some poor decisions.

With only 10 games remaining in a problematic season for the team, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports that Domi won’t be in the lineup tonight and he joins Mikhail Grigorenko and Scott Harrington as the team’s healthy scratches. Domi, 26, was supposed to be a key player for this Blue Jackets team this season, but he’s lost his temper twice in the past three games, earning himself four minor penalties and two misconducts.

Domi said, in one instance, Blackhawks Connor Murphy elbowed him in the head and that he wasn’t surprised Murphy didn’t fight back. And it’s embarrassing he didn’t fight back. He did acknowledge that he shouldn’t have taken a penalty like that.

Tortorella wouldn’t confirm this was the reason for Domi’s removal from the roster, but it seems to be the only logical explanation. Either Tortoreall is trying to send a message, or he’s concerned that Domi’s lack of self control is costing the team a chance to fight for their playoff lives.

Already 10 points back of the fourth place Nashville Predators, the Blue Jackets aren’t likely to be playing games in this particular postseason. They certainly won’t be if Domi can’t get himself under control and stop taking careless penalties.

Things Haven’t Worked Out For Domi

A physical player who admitted he needed to be more careful with the penalties he took over the last couple of games, Domi is a player that can live on the edge a bit. He’s a player that needs to teeter that line to be effective. That said, things don’t seem to be working out as well as they could be for Domi in Columbus.

After a 44-point 2019-20 campaign, the Blue Jackets traded Josh Anderson for Domi. He signed a two-year, $10.6MM deal, one which will carry a $6MM salary next season. He needs to do a lot more than produce 19 points through 44 games if he hopes to get a contract anywhere close to that in free agency.
