Marc Bergevin: Despite Rumors, Says He’s Not Moving Price or Weber

Don’t expect the Montreal Canadiens to move either of Shea Weber or Carey Price, that is, if you believe Marc Bergevin’s latest comments.

Pierre LeBrun of TSN commented on all the talk surrounding the Montreal Canadiens. Many believe a shakeup might be coming, some insiders suggesting the team may look at moving one of Carey Price or Shea Weber.

According to LeBruin, general manager Marc Bergevin said he has no intention of moving either guy. Citing the fact that Bergevin sees both as important leaders during a potential time of transition, he wants veteran leadership on the team as they get younger during the rebuild or retooling process.

Can We Believe Bergevin?

This is not the first time fans have heard something similar.

Back when the Canadiens moved P.K. Subban for Weber in a one-for-one deal, it came on the heels of the GM saying he had no desire to trade his star defenseman. He’s saying similar things about Weber.

Of course, the two scenarios are slightly different but Weber has no trade protection built into his contract. Sure, there might not be a ton of teams lining up to grab his hefty contract, but he’s having a great season, and as Bergevin notes, he’s one heck of a leader. There could be a team that sees the value in taking on his deal and if Montreal has the opportunity to move that money, would they?

Price, on the other hand, isn’t likely going anywhere. With a no-move clause and a huge salary, his hot-and-cold play make him a gamble for any team trying to pick up a starting netminder.

In the end, expect the Canadiens to be busy. Just don’t expect them to move the big-name pieces many might be hoping they move to make the NHL Trade Deadline that much more interesting.
