Are Maple Leafs Prepared To Trade Young Talent For Blue Line Help?

The Toronto Maple Leafs might have to give up a good young player to improve their defense. Are they willing to do so?

The issues in Toronto when it comes to the Maple Leafs blue line is a hot-button topic in the NHL these days. Perhaps no team has been hit with key injuries like the Maple Leafs and a team on the edge of being a playoff contender, the more their blue line corps goes down, the more likely their window to be a Stanley Cup contender shrinks.

Recently, the Maple Leafs called up of Timothy Liljegren and Rasmus Sandin in an attempt to find a short-term solution to the loss of Morgan Reilly and Jake Muzzin. This is a lot of pressure to put on two young players. And, the rest of the NHL knows it. Bob McKenzie of TSN reports the Leafs are getting calls from other NHL clubs hoping to take advantage of the situation and see if they can’t grab a talented young forward, offering up some help where Toronto badly needs it.

What The Maple Leafs Are Doing

Meanwhile, McKenzie also notes the Maple Leafs are not sitting idle waiting on other teams. He suspects the franchise is looking at ways of navigating through their issues and trying to address the injuries both internally and externally. Externally, he believes that trading for a defenseman isn’t entirely out of the question.

Their focus will be the right side of the blue line and the question will be what they’re willing to give up to improve it. Forwards like Kasperi Kapanen, Andreas Johnsson or Alex Kerfoot will be front-and-center during these conversations and that’s a big concern for the Maple Leafs who don’t want to give up such good young talent but might have little choice. Teams who know the Maple Leafs are scrambling see this as an opportunity to grab a good young player.

Defense Isn’t The Maple Leafs Only Issue

Clearly, there are trades the Maple Leafs can make. That said, the blue line isn’t Toronto’s only concern. A team that badly needs a backup netminder, a defense-for-a-forward trade might be all for not if the Maple Leafs can’t solve their backup issues. This has been a problem that’s plagued Toronto all season and long before injuries took their toll.
