Maple Leafs Trade for Jared McCann from the Pittsburgh Penguins

The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Jared McCann in exchange for Filip Hallander and a 7th round pick.

According to a few sources, including Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Jared McCann in exchange for Filip Hallander and a 7th round pick. McCann was rumored to be available in trade because the Pittsburgh Penguins were bound to lose him in the NHL Expansion Draft.

McCann was going to be exposed and, as a result, Ron Hextall wanted to acquire someone/something he didn’t need to protect. Hallander fills that role for the Penguins. It is expected now that Pittsburgh will protect Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust, Kaperi Kapanen, Teddy Blueger, and Brandon Tanev.

Related:

McCann is a strong, capable two-way middle six forward who can play wing and centre. He can shoot the puck and has offered the Penguins some production over the past few seasons. This past season he scored 32 points in 43 games (including 14 goals). More than that, at 25, he has played six seasons and 353 games in his NHL career. He’s scored 66 goals and 155 points and is known for being a very effective depth player largely playing in a third-line role. He brings experience to the Maple Leafs and the immediate reaction to the news of this trade is that it’s an excellent move by the Maple Leafs.

Some fans in Toronto are elated, as the deal means the Leafs essentially turned Kasperi Kapanen into Rodion Amirov and Jared McCann.

If there’s a downside, it’s that perhaps his higher shooting percentage isn’t sustainable and he may not score as much depending on where he slots into the Maple Leafs lineup. The good news, he’s got a good track record defensively.

For the Penguins, the team felt they had to move him, but the return is not good.

What’s Next for the Maple Leafs?

Obviously Toronto is going to lose a piece to Seattle, that is, unless they have a side deal worked out to manage who gets selected and who stays put. There could be lots of movement to come so we’ll see where this deal puts the Leafs ahead of the NHL Expansion Draft.

So Pens lose McCann and ZAR now. Why not just let them take McCann and move on. Hextall/Burke just did exactly what they said they wouldn’t do. Panic and make it worse. Which they did. They should have just let the Kraken take McCann and move on.
