Sharks Acquire G Adin Hill from Arizona Coyotes Ahead of Expansion Draft

The Arizona Coyotes have traded goaltender Adin Hill to the San Jose Sharks minutes before the NHL Expansion Draft list was to be submitted.

Kevin Kurz, a San Jose Sharks contributor for The Athletic, was all over the story on Saturday that the Sharks were looking to acquire another goaltender before submitting their NHL Expansion Draft protection list. Kurz broke the story that the team had acquired Adin Hill from the Arizona Coyotes, and the intention seems to be to leave Martin Jones exposed to the Seattle Kraken.

The official trade became Adin Hill and a 7th round pick for Josef Korenar and a 2nd-round selection. Both picks are from the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.

Because the Coyotes had two goalies who met the minimum exposure requirements, it was reported earlier in the week the team would possibly try to trade one. Hill was one of those goalies and Darcy Kuemper was the other. Korenar, who also meets the minimum requirement was an essential part of the deal because he makes it possible for the Coyotes to protect Kuemper.

Hill played this past season as Kuemper’s backup but has been getting more time in Arizona and impressing those who have watched him closely. He is considered one of the NHL’s more promising young goaltenders and over the past two seasons, Hill has recorded a .915 save percentage and 2.70 GAA in 32 games.

For Arizona, they felt Kuemper had a lot to still offer and Hill’s trade value was strong enough to bring in a draft pick for 2022. The Coyotes will now have to make a decision UFA netminder Antti Raanta. He’s the team’s 32-year-old backup that can still put up decent numbers.

What’s Next for the Sharks and Hill?

As for the Sharks, they’ll protect Hill and expose Jones, who is very unlikely to be selected. He simply hasn’t lived up expectations and has a hefty contract to boot. Hill will then get a chance to compete for the starting job in net with Jones, or whoever the Sharks start the season with if Jones is selected.

If the Seattle Kraken were looking at Hill, they’ll have to settle on a different goaltender. The good news is, there are lots of options as Jake Allen, Braden Holtby, Chris Driedger and Vitek Vanicek, among others, are likely candidates.
