Maple Leafs Add Ben Hutton, Move Barabanov in Last-Minute Trades

The Toronto Maple Leafs made one final deal, adding 27-year-old defenceman Ben Hutton from the Anaheim Ducks.

Alexander Barabanov Ben Hutton

According to reports just ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline closing on Monday, the Toronto Maple Leafs made one final deal, adding 27-year-old defenceman Ben Hutton from the Anaheim Ducks. As Michael Traikos writes, “The checklist is complete. The Leafs added top-six grit (Nick Foligno), forward depth (Riley Nash), defensive depth (Ben Hutton) and goalie depth (David Rittich) before the deadline.” He adds, “And they did it without having to give away a prospect or a roster player. Give Dubas credit.”

Hutton is a left shot who has five points in 34 games (and minus-13) for the Ducks this season. He’s a good penalty killer and a big body. He predictably saw his numbers dip back down after a crazy bump last year but a serviceable player.

He’ll add some depth for the Leafs outside of their usual top six and if someone gets hurt, he could slot in. For a fifth round pick, not a bad acquisition.

Maple Leafs Also Move Barabanov

Seravalli is also reporting that the Leafs have traded Alexander Barabanov for 27-year-old Finnish centre Antti Suomela. Suomela has no points in four games this season, but has 15 points in 51 career games.

Some are suspecting this was GM Kyle Dubas doing Barabanov a favour and sending him to a team that will give him more ice time. He wasn’t about to get much in Toronto.

Dubas clearly is trying to give his team the best chance to win this year, even if he moved a lot of the future in terms of draft picks to do it.

More to come…
