NHL Trade Deadline: Winnipeg Jets Add Defenseman Jordie Benn

The Winnipeg Jets added an experienced depth defenseman in Jordie Benn just moments before the NHL Trade Deadline closed.

The Winnipeg Jets needed to add a defenseman before the trade deadline. They did so, but the question will be if it was enough. Jordie Benn has been moved from the Vancouver Canucks to the Jets for a sixth-round pick. He’s a decent depth blueliner, but he’s not necessarily what the Jets really needed, at least not if you ask most of the TSN insiders who reacted to the trade.

Benn is a penalty kill specialist and depth defenceman who probably won’t play a ton of minutes. He’s the kind of guy who could slot in for one game then be pulled the next, not seeing regular action as the Jets try to cement themselves a good position in the playoffs and win a couple rounds. At the same time, Ben offers experience and size and could come in useful. The team could have done a whole lot worse and didn’t have to come up much to get him.

The consensus seems to be that the Jets needed to make a bigger splash on defense and while Benn was a nice add, not the ideal fit. Most Jets fans were hoping the team would go after a player like David Savard. At the time of this writing, it is possible the Jets have more in the trade que, but if not, questions will surround their decision not to do more.

Benn is a pending UFA this season and is likely a pure rental for this season.
