Lightning Sign Ilya Mikheyev to 4-Year Deal

One of the more interesting names in free agency is off the board. Ilya Mikheyev is going to the Tampa Bay Lightning on a four-year deal. The AAV is reported to be $3.85 million per season.

Mikheyev, 31, is a Russian-born winger who broke into the NHL with Toronto in 2019 after a decorated KHL career with Avangard Omsk. He’s known primarily as a speed-and-defense player — one of the fastest skaters in the league — with a reputation as an elite penalty killer; last season he led all NHL forwards in shorthanded ice time per game.

His offensive numbers are modest but steady: across 427 career regular-season games he’s posted 98 goals and 103 assists for 201 points, split between Toronto, Vancouver, and most recently Chicago after a 2024 trade.

His most productive stretch came in his contract year with Toronto in 2021-22 (21 goals, 32 points in 54 games), which set up the four-year, $19 million deal he signed with Vancouver that summer. That contract was later traded to Chicago in 2024, with Vancouver retaining 15% of the cap hit.

He finished last season with the Blackhawks posting 16 goals, 17 assists, and 33 points.

For Tampa Bay, he profiles as a depth/energy add — someone who can play up and down the lineup, kill penalties at an elite level, and bring speed on the forecheck, rather than a scoring piece. Want me to turn this into a full write-up on the signing?
