Maple Leafs Talking to Colton Sissons: What Would He Add?
Colton Sissons won’t move the needle on the scoresheet, but he might fix exactly what the Maple Leafs need in the bottom six.
Colton Sissons is the kind of signing that doesn’t look flashy on day one, but if he is signed by the team, he can help the Toronto Maple Leafs a lot—especially if you’re talking about that playoff-style bottom-six hockey where effort and staying responsible matter more than highlight plays.
For starters, Sissons is basically ready-made for the fourth-line role. He’s a real veteran (he’s 33 in November) and he’s played a ton of NHL games. So the adjustment to Toronto shouldn’t be huge. Sissons gives coaches a steady option when they want someone to win puck battles. He works hard in the corners and makes sure the team doesn’t get run around. He won’t be surprised by the pace or the physical side of things.
Sissons Brings Grit and Experience
The biggest part of his game is the grit. Sissons has shown he can chip in with hits and blocked shots, which is exactly the kind of stuff that wears teams down. The Maple Leafs probably don’t need him to be a constant scoring threat every night. Instead, they need him to be annoying in the right ways: getting in lanes, finishing checks, and helping set the tone on the tougher matchups. Even when he’s not scoring, he can still flip a shift with effort and smart positioning.
Offensively, Toronto fans shouldn’t expect Sissons to suddenly become some “secret goal-scorer.” His value is more like: a little secondary scoring when it’s there, some occasional power-play looks, and mostly dependable production from a deeper lineup spot. That’s still useful, because it helps round out the roster and gives Toronto more flexibility during a long season.

The Additive Effect of Adding Sissons to the Maple Leafs Roster
Overall, the hope is he slides in smoothly and steadies things on the third/fourth line. He’d be especially useful if injuries pop up or if the matchups get nasty. In short, Sissons brings size, experience, and two-way reliability, which is the stuff teams want when the playoffs get messy and the “grind line” ends up being the difference.
